Guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour joined as a fifth member in December 1967, several months prior to Syd Barrett's April 1968 departure due to deteriorating mental health.
With the loss of Syd, the band moved from psychedelic pop to a more progressive sound, with many tracks written collaboratively while on tour.
With this line-up they achieved critical and commercial success with the concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979).
With Animals and The Wall, Roger Waters became the primary songwriter.
Richard Wright was forced by Roger Waters to leave the group in 1979.
Following The Final Cut, the group was temporarily disbanded by Roger Waters.
David Gilmour and Nick Mason reformed in 1985, and were subsequently rejoined by Richard Wright.
They continued to record and tour through 1994, despite Roger Waters' failed 1986 attempt to legally prevent them continuing as Pink Floyd; two more albums followed, A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994).
After almost two decades of acrimony the band reunited in 2005 for a single performance, at the global awareness event Live 8.
Richard Wright died in 2008.
Surviving members David Gilmour and Nick Mason joined Roger Waters at one of his The Wall Tour shows on 12 May 2011 at the O2 Arena in London; David Gilmour performed Comfortably Numb along with Roger Waters and Outside the Wall with Nick Mason and Roger Waters.

Syd Barrett was really a cornerstone of the band. Everything they did after that point was influenced by Syd in some way or another.
Pink Floyd’s second masterwork,
Wish You Were Here,

It’s one of my favorite albums and a fitting tribute to the genius that was Syd.
Looks like Syd may have died from complications related to his diabetes:Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who co-founded Pink Floyd but spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, a spokeswoman for the band said Tuesday. He was 60.
The spokeswoman – who declined to give her name until the band made an official announcement – confirmed media reports that he had died.
She said Barrett died several days ago, but she did not disclose the cause of death.
Barrett had suffered from diabetes for many years.
Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright, and wrote many of the band’s early songs.
The group’s jazz-infused rock made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene, and the 1967 album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn – largely written by Syd Barrett, who also played guitar – was a commercial and critical hit.

I’m not sure that his life was all that great these days, though, so it may be a blessing for him to go peacefully.
His stature in the music industry will only continue to rise with his passing.
He founded one of the greatest rock and roll bands ever, and his creativity sparked their genius long after he was out of the group.

Pink Floyd’s unheralded, and underrated, debut album.
Recorded at the same time as The Beatles Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hears Club Band (and in the same studio - Abbey Road), it’s hard not to notice a few similarities between the two.

Whereas The Beatles were well into their careers by this point and first starting to experiment with drugs and the wonders of the recording studio, Floyd was still a young, undeveloped pop act that was writing tripped out songs about gnomes, strange cats, and galaxies.
Lyrically and musically, this album belongs to Syd Barrett.
The underground London hippie scene was in full effect at this point, and this album reflects those times.
Listening to it now, parts are dated and somewhat corny.
But if you put yourself in the mind frame of 1967 and compare this album to other psychedelic albums of the time, you could sense that Pink Floyd wasn’t just some drop in the pan band that was going to disappear.
They were just beginning.

 

A Saucerful of Secrets 1968

By this point, Floyd was still a struggling band on the circuit and Syd Barrett’s drug abuse and mental state were taking their toll.
Syd was relieved of his duties during the recording and replaced by David Gilmour.
This is the only Pink Floyd album that technically contained a 5-member lineup, with Syd Barrett and David Gilmour splitting the guitar parts.
The tensions within the band at this time are apparent on the album.
Roger Waters was starting to take over the writing from Syd Barrett, but was still far off from his future works.
This album sounds like Pink Floyd at a crossroads trying to define themselves.
It was also the beginning of the change in sound for the band.
With the absence of Syd Barrett’s LSD laced lyrics and song structures, longer, more atmospheric numbers started appearing.

A patchy album to be sure - it's the soundtrack to an arty drama by director Barbet Schroeder about drug fiends in Ibiza - but when the music works it's more than memorable.
While the album also showcases Roger Waters early flowerings as a songwriter following Syd Barrett's departure, the group-composed instrumental Main Theme shows the quartet starting to find its feet as a post-psychedelic ambient spacerock band.
This track is a masterful exercise in space and atmosphere.
It has multiple melodies - played an organ, synth and eerie slide guitar - yet the overall effect is spare and understated.
Nick Mason's drum figures here are seriously hypnotizing.



Ummagumma 1969

Floyd’s first double-album, with one record being four live tracks and the other containing “solo” pieces by each member.

As for the solo sections, it doesn’t get any more self-indulgent than this.
I’m not sure how many people can make it through any of these recordings without being on at least three hits of acid or married to a member of the band.
The tracks are long, sometimes pointless, extremely psychedelic, and progressive.
What’s really amazing is that a record company would allow a band of Floyd’s caliber, in 1969, to release such an experimental record.
The band seemed to still be struggling to find its sound at this point without a lead songwriter or charismatic leader like Syd Barrett.

 

Atom Heart Mother 1970

The title track is over 23 minutes long and broken up into movements like a symphony.
Each being weirder than its predecessor.
This is almost Ummagumma Pt. 2. Roger Waters, Richard Wright, and David Gilmour seemed to be each trying to gain momentum as lead songwriter and take the band onto one unified path.
Pink Floyd was starting to become a band with no direction, no leader, no songwriters, but lots and lots of creativity and ambience.
Their studio experimentations were starting to take over the song writing process, and the band seemed more concerned with sounding weird than actually sounding good.



Meddle 1971

Perhaps more than any other album during that time period, 1971′s Meddle finds the happy medium that threads these two successful yet divergent eras of Pink Floyd.
It contains enough experimental music to make it interesting to the art lover, just enough melodic songs to be liked by the pop music lover, and a few brilliant moments of theatrical rock'n roll to make it collectable to those who love The Dark Side of the Moon.
The first side of the album contains five standard-length tracks while the second contains the single, side long Echoes.
This song forcasts much of what Pink Floyd would put out throughout the decade of the 1970's, save the shorter material on The Wall.
The song begins with an experimental sound similar to a submarine "ping", created by keyboardist Richard Wright, who fed a single note through a Leslie speaker.
The song slowly works towards the standard verses and choruses before sliding into a very long middle section of blues jams and experimental passages then finally returning for a the last verse/chorus sequence. All in all it is a 23-minute piece.
The first side starts with the instrumental One Of These Days, which would become a concert staple for decades to come.
It is driven by a constant buzzing bass, backwards-masked effects, and a howling guitar lead.
The song explodes into a wind storm that leads into "A Pillow of Winds", a soft acoustic love song much in the vein of those put out on albums like Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother.
This second song could not be in more contrast to the first.
Fearless may be the best overall song on the album and talks about meeting challenges in the face of adversity.
Musically it is highlighted by David Gilmour's calm yet strong guitar strumming and the odd beat from drummer Nick Mason.
The odd ending to the song uses field recordings from an English soccer game, with fans singing You'll Never Walk Alone by Gerry & the Pacemakers in a heavily reverberated, eerie fade-out.
San Tropez is a jazz-inflected pop song with a shuffle tempo, composed and sang by Roger Waters.
It adds yet another diverse dimension to the album with its easy-going crooner-like melody and atmosphere.
Side one concludes with the throwaway Seamus, a pseudo-blues novelty song meant to be a humorous filler with an annoying, howling dog throughout.
The song is often ranked as the worst song ever by dedicated Pink Floyd fans.
Meddle received generally positive critical reviews and was a moderately well seller on both sides of the Atlantic.
Going platinum in bothe the US and the UK and reach #3 on the English charts.

 
Obscured by Clouds 1972

De obligatoriske, melodiske hylende guitarsoloer er over det hele.
Det er som om nogen endelig fortalte David Gilmour, at han rent faktisk fik lov til at spille soloer og ikke bare lænede sig tilbage i Syd Barrett's lange skygge.
Roger Waters begyndte også at tage over som ledendesangskriver, og selvom det stadig er underudviklet, er der tegn på, at han virkelig var ved at tage sig ud som en konceptuel forfatter.
Masser af gode melodier, instrumentering og sangskrivning dette album.


Not sure why drummer Nick Mason refused to play his hi-hat on this album, but that combined with the overall mediocre production and the fact that it was the score to some unknown, low-budget sci-fi flick, one would think, would make this what the kids call a “wack” album.
But it isn’t.
David Gilmour finally started flashing his guitar and singing skills on this one.
The obligatory, melodic, whining guitar solos are all over this record.
It’s as if someone finally told David Gilmour that he was actually allowed to play solos and not sit back in Syd Barrett’s long shadow.
Roger Waters also began to take over as lead songwriter, and though still underdeveloped, there are signs that he was about to really take off as a conceptual writer.
Plenty of good melodies, instrumentation, and writing on this album.



Dark Side of the Moon 1973

Hmmm, hvad kan jeg sige om dette album som ikke allerede er blevet sagt?

Pink Floyd var begyndt at eksperimentere mere med at få bedre lyd end blot at gøre dem underlige.
Dette er deres første koncept album, som har en masse numre der kører ind i hinanden, og et tema, der binder dem alle sammen.

Hmmm, what can I say about this album that hasn’t already been said?
That it’s an overrated, overplayed, over-hyped stoner rock classic?
That you have to be high to listen to it?
Perhaps.
But like Flea said about Under the Bridge, “I don’t care if it’s overplayed, it’s still a great fuckin song.” Same can be said with this album.
Not only did Pink Floyd do a 180 turn around in terms of production from Obscured to this, but the conceptual writing of Roger Waters finally bloomed.
This is one of the overall best produced album - ever! Pink Floyd was starting to experiment more with getting better sounds than making weird ones.
This is their first concept album that had all tracks running into each other, and a theme that tied them all together.
David Gilmour shines, Waters writing is brilliant, and Richard Wright showed us why he was the resident musician of the band.
This was the crossover album of the decade.
Pink Floyd was now in 1973 as mainstream as Neil Young and Led Zeppelin.
This is the album that took them from a psychedelic, art band to commercial megastars and classic rockers. Contains the best of both writing styles: part ambient, dark, experimental pieces; part poppy 5 minute rockers with soul.
And I still don’t think it’s even their best work.

 

Wish You Were Here 1975

Maskinen kendt som Pink Floyd var nu i fuldt gear efter deres store gennembruds succes med Dark Side Of The Moon.
Bandet var nu megarock-stjerner efter en yderst succesfuld turné i USA.
Alle vidste, hvem Pink Floyd var.
Alt dette, kombineret med et uanmeldt besøg i studiet af Syd Barrett, påvirkede skriveprocessen, og indspilningerne til Wish You Were Here.
Stemningen på albummet er sober og reflekterer bandets pludselige opstigning til succes.
På en eller anden måde har de også formået at smide et par radio-venlige sange med Syd Barrett ind i mellem de ni dele af den episke Shine on You Crazy Diamond.
Wish You Were Here, sangen blev Pink Floyd's mest tilgængelige single til dato, og et klassisk rock hit i radioen.

The machine known as Pink Floyd was now in full gear after the huge breakthrough success of Dark Side.
The band were now mega rock stars coming off a hugely successful U.S. tour.
Everyone knew who Pink Floyd was, and the record execs made sure to ride the gravy train all they could.
All this, combined with a surprise visit in the recording studio from Syd Barrett, influenced the writing process and recording sessions for Wish You Were Here.
The mood of the album is one of soberness and reflection on the bands sudden rise to success. Somehow, they also managed to throw in a couple of radio-friendly songs between the epic Shine on You Crazy Diamond nine-part opus to Barrett.
Wish You Were Here, the song, became Floyd’s most accessible single to date and classic rock radio staple.
Soon, the kids who thought Floyd was just some drugged out hippie band realized that these guys could also write songs like Elton John.
Undoubtedly, the record excess had a huge role in making sure the band maintained its current radio friendly approach.
Roger Waters even wrote the song, Have A Cigar, attacking the corporate mainstreaming of the band.
Now everyone could be a Pink Floyd fan and sing along to their hit singles.
It was starting to make the die-hard fans sick to their stomachs that a band that was so experimental and underground were now the superstars in limos playing to sold out stadiums and writing songs that your girlfriend could listen to.



Animals 1977

Efter to meget succesfulde, radiovenlige die-hard isolerede albums, hvad gjorde Pink Floyd så?
Kom ud med sit mindst tilgængelige album fra post-Dark Side æraen.

After two highly successful, radio friendly, die-hard fan isolating albums, what did Floyd do?
Put out its least accessible album of the post-Dark Side era.
By now, the band was taking two years between each record, and Roger Waters megalomania was starting to take its toll on the band and all around him.
Roger Waters was the main writer for both Dark Side and Wish You Were Here and was peaking when he wrote the lyrics for Animals.
Loosely interpreted from George Orwell’s, Animal Farm, Waters wrote three songs correlating animals with human society.
The album contains three main tracks, each clocking in over 10 minutes in length, placed between two acoustic love ballads. Pigs were the politicians, Dogs were the greedy businessmen, and Sheep were the common man.
The song structures and musicianship on this record show why Pink Floyd are the great band that they are considered today.
Epic arrangements combined with great lyrics and singing, make this perhaps Pink Floyd’s best overall work.
The tracks are upbeat and more “rock” than anything they had done before.
This is a less ambient album than its predecessors, and its subsequent tour would change the band forever.



The Wall 1979

At a show in Montreal during the Animals tour, Roger Waters spit on an unruly fan in the front row, which led to the concept of building a wall between the band and its fans…literally.
This incident launched the greatest concept album every written.
The recording took over 11 months, and included plenty of orchestration from Michael Kamen and guest musicians.
Roger Waters was now in full control of Pink Floyd’s writing, concepts, and overall direction.
His relationship with his band mates had gotten so bad that Richard Wright appears on only a few tracks on the record and the band went in with the knowledge that this would be their last recording together.
The album follows Roger Waters childhood dealing with his fathers World War II death, his rise to rock stardom, and his fall into megalomania as a controlling figure in the band.
Highly influenced by Syd Barrett’s rise and fall, The Wall is an extremely emotional and personal album. The songs blend into one and another to tell the conceptual story, and the bands writing had become more orchestrated and produced.
There were the hit singles Another Brick In The Wall and Comfortably Numb which contains perhaps Gilmours best guitar solo, but there were also soul draining numbers about love lost, drug abuse, and being a cult superhero.
The Wall tells the story of rock stardom and the dark, disturbing things it can bring.
Most would say this is the bands masterpiece.
It is hard to argue against the point that this is perhaps Pink Floyd's “greatest” album.

  

The Final Cut 1983

Lad os være realistiske, dette er mere Roger Waters første soloalbum end Pink Floyd's sidste album.
Rick Wright var ude af bandet, og en anden trommeslager blev brugtdet meste af studie sessionerne, David Gilmour synger kun på ét nummer og bruges sparsomt til tilfældige guitarsoloer, og konceptet var Roger Waters fars død. Let’s get realistic; this is more Roger Waters first solo album than Floyd’s final album.
Rick Wright was out of the band, another drummer was used for most of studio sessions, David Gilmour sings on only one track and is used sparingly for random guitar solos, and the concept was about Roger Waters father’s death.
The music sounds more like a soundtrack to a World War II movie than a “rock” album.
Those expecting another Wall or Dark Side must have been highly disappointed but this is probably one of the most intense albums you will ever listen to. Extremely personal lyrics and stories of war create a sense of empathy for Water’s situation.
It’s obvious that at this juncture of their career, after four successful albums, Pink Floyd was going to do whatever they wanted to do.
Even though this isn’t really a Pink Floyd album, it was a very un-sensational end to a highly successful and influential career.
